With a sad heart, I am writing to let you know that Special Olympics New Zealand has been forced to make the heart-breaking decision to postpone the 2021 Freemasons New Zealand National Summer Games (NSG) to 2022.
There were three key issues that our Board considered when making this decision
The wellbeing of our athletes and volunteers the most important one. There is a high risk of infection with Delta, and we want to ensure that everyone is safe.
Delta has created a heightened level of uncertainty.  We consulted with our clubs, and they have made it clear that they needed certainty sooner, rather than later if we had to postpone.  It is important that the whole country can participate and for all athletes to have a level playing field with their preparation for the Games.
Finally, management of the financial risk means that our losses could be significant if we wait any longer.
We will let know you as soon as the new dates are confirmed and they will be made available to everyone.  Asti Farrell (events@specialolympics.org.nz) will be the main contact from 30 September, however I will still be available for any questions until then.
Thank you so much for your support of our athletes and we hope you will be able to make it to the 2022 Games.
Best regards
Nikki Cameron
